“What we need to teach people isn’t necessarily what the magic frequency is, but what the magic to music is” – Alan Douches
This was to me a highly inspiring conversation that I had with the awesome mastering engineer Alan Douches of West west side music.
He’s mastered everything from Killswitch Engage, Converge, Mastodon, Motorhead, you name it and he’s done it. He’s a guy those so incredibly passionate about and deeply committed to what he does.
He’s a true master in the technical aspects of audio and also has something beyond the technical. He listens with a musical ear, is engaged on a personal level and has that great combination of the technical and the musical which all great mastering engineers have.
We talked for quite a long time and he was very enthusiastic about the things we talked about and we agreed on many things throughout what was an effortless 2 hours.
We discussed the reality of how modern music has become too glued to “the grid” and the way excessive and unnecessary processing has really worked against the musicality of songs being produced now. Our discussion was so fruitful that we are planning to talk again and dig in even deeper on the technical side of a number of these subjects.
